My teaching style is student centered, providing multiple and differentiated opportunities for diverse learners to make meaning from the material presented. I believe that every student deserves an individualized approach to learning, and it is important to connect education to other aspects of a student's life. Students in my classroom will learn how to think as scientists, use skills crucial to the understanding of biology and develop confidence in their ability to make sense of the world around them. I want to create a mindset of investigation, discovery and communication early on to make class engaging and learning fun. A lively pace, active dialogue between myself and students and emphasizing significance of student work can create an effective learning environment that mirrors the scientific community. Skills that my students will need to thrive can be gained through both direct and activity-based instruction.
Skills that I will use to help students learn come directly from the NGSS. Making and using models is something that can be incorporated almost daily. When students use each other and external artifacts as sources of knowledge, concepts and parts of processes become much more attainable. I will provide opportunities for students to both observe and carry out investigations of natural phenomena. When my classes do this, there will be an emphasis on creating effective procedures and collecting valid data. My students will then use this data to create solutions to problems, and explanations for each other and the world outside of the classroom. Students in my class will be exposed to information and questions around them, and I will do my best to make them aware of their ability to utilize this information. These skills and goals will be challenging to all involved. A teamwork culture will be established in my classes so that we can all work together to achieve these goals.

Ultimately, I want to successfully instill awareness of learning in students. Information from biology can be seen firsthand in the world around us. Experiences in my classroom will be connected to each other in clear ways to students, and this is important because everything is connected in Biology. I want students to reflect on past knowledge and skills they possess to power their journey to gaining new knowledge.
